The Plastic Toothbrush Problem

3.6 billion toothbrushes are sold around the world each year, with a shocking 80% of them ending up in our oceans and landfill. Once in the ocean the plastic is detrimental to marine life within it. Not only damaging, but potentially also killing them off. It could even end up in some of the food we consume - a bit of plastic with your dinner anyone?
I’m sure no would be the answer to that, and no would also be the answer from any fish, mammal, turtle, or sea bird if you asked them if they want a toothbrush for extra company whilst they go about their day down in the depths on the ocean.

The recommended time to change your toothbrush is every 2/3 months, so for one human, a consumption of at least four toothbrushes a year. Think how many humans there are on this planet that own plastic toothbrushes, then times that by four and so on, you can do the maths……….basically, it’s a hell of a lot of plastic consumed!
Not only is the manufacturing process for a plastic toothbrush a toxic chemical nightmare, but the crude oil also used in the process is a nonrenewable source, leading to a devastating impact on both habitats and ecosystems. And let’s just say when they do reach landfill, it’s time for them to get comfy and settle down - they take a whopping 400 years to decompose!!! And even during this process they continue to release nasty chemicals into the air that we breathe!
