Do Christmas the Sustainable Way

Experience over gift

Instead of buying someone a gift for Christmas, you could opt for an experience instead. Not only is the excitement not then short lived, yourself (if you included you in the experience) and a friend or family member has something to look forward to and get excited about after the Christmas cheer has settled.

Eyes bigger than the belly trap

Of course there is going to be some food left over at Christmas and who doesn’t love a turkey sandwich or some bubble and squeak the next day! However, how you store these leftovers can make a big difference sustainably. Don’t reach straight for the plastic, opt for eco friendly coverings such as foil or a tupperware container.

Wrap but don’t waste

Buy wrapping paper that can be recycled once it’s been used! And remember that neither ribbons or the tape can be recycled, so you could even get creative with some different wrapping techniques that eliminate the usage of both of these.

Chose the tree wisely

Although having a fake tree may seem less hassle and you don’t have to deal with the aftermath of the needles on your floor, it’s not the best choice for the environment. Buying an artificial one only adds more plastic waste to our landfills and oceans. Go green and embrace those needles!

Go for led lighting

Led lights are capable of turning about 70% of their energy into light, ensuring they are much more efficient than other light bulbs which turns theirs into heat. Make sure you also switch them off when you hit the sack.

Create your own crackers

Why not get the family or friends involved and have a go and make your own Christmas crackers. You’ll need some toilet roll tubes and A4 paper to get you started, check out the full list here. More eco friendly and also much more fun than buying them ready made!

Take into consideration the above and you’ll be on your way to a more sustainable Christmas, also making sure that your gift to the environment this year isn’t a top up of plastic pollution and more damage to the environment. Check out more eco friendly tips here.
